1491 PLUTARCH Parallel Lives Incunable Cicero Hannibal Plato Aristotle Homer. Entirely complete incunable printing of Plutarch! The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled. Plutarchs Lives or Parallel Lives is one of the most important and comprehensive collection of biographies of famous Greek and Roman figures.

Plutarch was not so much focused on providing a historical account of these famous individuals as much as he was seeking to write of the type of person they were and the life in which they lived. He focuses on Alexander the Great, Romulus and Remus, Demosthenes, Cicero, Brutus, Julius Caesar, and many other important figures.

This exceedingly rare 1491, incunable edition of Plutarch was published by Giovanni Ragazzo in Venice and features two full-page decorative title pages. It is one of the earliest and most charming examples of decorative woodcut friezes in 15. Ragazzo also includes an empty escutcheon which was intended to be filled with the armorial bearing of the owner, which in this case was filled.

This fine edition features the commentary and translations of various authors, including Lives that were attributed to Plutarch that were later discovered to be written by other authors. According to the ISTC, this work Includes lives. Of Hannibal, Scipio Africanus, and Carolus Magnus by Donatus Acciaiolus. Of Agesilaus by Xenophon (attributed to Plutarch).

Of Cicero by Leonardus Brunus. Pomponius Atticus by Cornelius Nepos.

Of Plato by Guarinus Veronensis. Of Aristoteles by Leonardus Brunus. Of Homer, ascribed to Herodotus. Plus much more see photo of contents. Venetiis [Venice]: per Ioannem Rigatium de Montef errato, 1491.
