Alcoholics Anonymous, "The Big Book". Works Publishing Company, New York 1939. Condition: Fine; Dust Jacket: Near Fine. This First Edition, First Printing copy of the "Big Book" has been carefully owned and treasured in a single family for five generations. Copies with the original dust jacket in this condition are increasingly rare. , unique to the first printing. Boards are the original red cloth cover, clean, unblemished, without soiling or staining. Original gilt imprint on cover and spine are intact with sheen. Corners are square and even with boards.

First issue red & yellow dust jacket is clean and without marring, staining, tears, repairs, or fading, with minor crimping top and bottom of spine. Text is clean, unfoxed, and unmarked except for penciled price, "3.50" inside the back cover. Binding is even and sound, barely broken. Carroll Whittemore was one of the first AAs in the Boston area, and was a noted church designer, stained glass artist, and author of books on Christian symbols and iconography. Estaver and the other pastors funded Carroll's Christian book and supply store, "Whittemore's" of Needham, Massachusetts (now defunct with his death). Estaver, incidentally, was an advocate of the "Oxford Groups, " (later known as "Moral Rearmament"), whose "Six Steps" of Christian living were later expanded into AA's famous Twelve Steps.

Only 4,650 copies were printed of this highly desirable first printing, rarely found three-quarters of a century later in this condition. In 2011, Time magazine placed the book on its list of the 100 best and most influential books written in English since 1923, the beginning of the magazine.
