Legend of Sleepy Hollow, c. 1880, Sketch Book, Washington Irving, Spectre Bridegr
T here is a sacredness in tears. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition and of unspeakable love. E we offer an early deluxe illustrated edition of the stories by Washington Irving, excerpted from The Sketch Book by Geoffrey Crayon , consisting of the three classics: "Little Britain, " "The Spectre Bridegroom, " and his most popular story, "The Legend of Sl;eepy Hollow, " published by G. Putnam's Sons in New York. The book is bound in impressed and gilted silk beveled boards, the text block is gilted all the way around (to keep dust out,) and the book features many fine engravings, including a tissue-protected frontispiece.
Though the book is undated, I have accepted the 1880 inscription as the publishing date, as it is consistent with the book's appearance. Edgeworn boards please see pics.
Cracking front and rear endpage gutters have been sealed with ph-neutral binder's adhesive. Binding is very tight and square; text is very clean, bright, and crisp. 176 pages, measures approximately 8 x 6-inches. This iconic American collection will make a wonderful addition to your library or a very special gift. Have you seen all the amazing first and rare editions of iconic books we offer?
