Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (Lucan), Pharsalia or De Bello Civili, Amsterdam: Typis Ludovici Elzeviri, 1651. Pharsalia or On the Civil war is an ancient Roman poem detailing the civil war between Julius Caesar and the Senate. Lucan writes of the cultural despair experienced in Rome and also exposes many of the flaws that Julius Caesar possessed in his political and military leadership. Along with the historical importance, Pharsalia includes elemants of the supernatural, dream interpretation, ghosts and prophetic visions! This 17th century printing is VERY desirable for a number of reasons, but is most notable for its exquisite binding!
