THIS IS A VERY RARE first edition/2nd printing copy of an important and early title of children's literature chronicling the African American childhood experience in the southern US along the Roanoke River valley. 1947 RIVER TREASURE by Mebane Holoman Burgwyn - 1st Edition, 2nd printing in original boards and dust jacket, published by Oxford Books. Original blue boards with black text. The book is in VERY GOOD+ condition. Light shelf and edge wear - lightly bumped spine tips and corners, unfaded colorful boards, all lettering intact, square spine, tight pages, hinges and joints.

NOT an ex-library or book club copy. Some abrasion/rubbing to front and rear boards. Some usual light foxing to end papers and page edges. Interior is in excellent shape - super clean and undamaged - no page toning, no markings, no ex libris marks or bookstore stamps, no dog-eared pages, no writing, no rips or tears. The dust jacket is also in VERY GOOD+ condition.

Original colorful dust jacket is unclipped with very little chipping, light edge wear, light soiling and rubbing. Copies are scarce, copies in higher grade condition with no markings inside, with a dust jacket and not ex-library are rare! Keep in mind, this was a children's book (most get marked up) with a small print run and with most copies going to libraries. She was born in Rich Square, North Carolina, and graduated from Woman's College [now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro] in 1935 with a bachelor's degree in primary education.

She secured a master's degree in guidance and counseling from East Carolina University in 1961. Burgwyn lived with her family on a farm near Jackson, North Carolina, where she worked as Director of Guidance Services for Northampton County Schools. She was the author of seven books for young people, many of them about the experiences of farm life. Please follow me as I have thousands of highly collectible books to list in the coming weeks and months!
