The Catcher in the Rye. Boston: Little, Brown and Company. AN INSCRIBED COPY of the tenth printing (September, 1951) OF THE FIRST EDITION. The interior is bright, tight and unmarked, with the exception of the front endpaper, the head of which Salinger has inscribed in the year of publication: Dec. 24, 1951 / To Elizabeth Fuller-- / with best wishes, / J.
Salinger's J is slightly feathered where he brushed it before the ink was dry. Below his inscription is a subsequent owner's small, early (pre-ZIP code) address stamp.
The supplied dustjacket is original, and the correct second state, with the alignment of the author's photo on the rear panel adjusted after the first printing. The tenth printing was the last to feature the photo before it was replaced with reviews. Other than slight rubbing at the folds and corners, the jacket is flawless, and presents beautifully. I haven't been able to ascertain Ms. But interestingly, another copy of the same printing has come to the market in the past, identically inscribed to a different woman on the same date.
One pictures a room full of people--maybe a Christmas party. Signed copies are very scarce, and ones inscribed in the year of publication are rare--a word I don't use lightly. Salinger's autograph is a magnet for forgers, but this one glows with authenticity, and is guaranteed forever.
