A Defence and History of Magna Charta by Samuel Johnson, First edition 1769
A History and Defence of Magna Charta. Containing a Copy of the Original Charter at Large, with an English Translation; The Manner of its being obtained from King John, with its Preservation and Final Establishment in the Succeeding Reigns; with an Introductory Discourse, Containing a Short Account of the Rise and Progress of National Freedom, from the Invasion of Caesar to the Present Times. Also the Liberties which are Confirmed by the Bill of Rights, to which is added, an Essay on Parliaments, Describing their Origin in England, and the Extraordinary Means by which they have been lengthened from half Yearly to Septennial ones. Bound in original brown leather binding, with title to the spine. There is wear to the edges and some marking to the boards, as to be expected in a book of this age, but the binding remains firm and square. Inside, there is a neat inscription to the ffep and a booksellers label to the bottom corner of the pastedown. There is staining from water damage throughout the book, evident to the pastedown and the bottom of each page. There are a couple of tears to the ffep, some toning and the occasional rub or mark. However, given it's age, this fascinating book is in remarkable condition.
This book is a rare find, but provides insight to one of the most important documents in English history and interesting discussion on the founding and history of government and Parliament as we know it. It would prove a very worthwhile addition to any historical collection. This item is in the category "Books, Comics & Magazines\Antiquarian & Collectable".
